A mythical insect

Originally native to Africa, the praying mantis is a well-represented insect in the Mediterranean region. It is called “religious” because of its front legs, which it folds up as if to pray when it is on the lookout for prey.

Characteristics of the praying mantis

It’s very common in the Ardèche, and you’ll even find it at the Mas de la Fontenette holiday cottage in the Gorges de l’Ardèche. What a pleasure it is to watch it beside our heated infinity pool at Labastide de Virac (near Vallon Pont d’Arc).

A diurnal insect between 5cm and 8cm long, its front legs carry spikes and are capable of folding and relaxing very quickly. They sometimes capture large prey. Harmless to humans, it feeds on live animals that it catches with its front paws. It immobilises them by devouring their cervical ganglia and then the rest of the body down to the tip of the abdomen. Its prey are generally other insects such as locusts, grasshoppers, butterflies, bees, etc.

The mantis can turn its head 180°, enabling it to follow the movements of its prey without moving its body. Brown or green individuals can be found in the same places. Because of their homochromy, they can easily go unnoticed in their environment. These characteristics make this insect a specialist in stalking.

Reproduction of the praying mantis

In Europe, the adult praying mantis mates between August and October. The male is sometimes eaten during or after copulation. After six successive metamorphoses, the adult insect has wings, which were previously absent. Its Latin name is Mantis religiosa.
