The Fox at Mas de la Fontenette

The Fox at Mas de la Fontenette

This magnificent fox was filmed at Mas de la Fontenette, a superb gite with heated swimming pool in the Ardèche gorges. It sometimes roams freely around the property. He’s not very shy and lets himself be discreetly filmed, as in this video taken from the window of the Mas de la Fontenette. May he be spared the murderous madness of hunters, who shoot at anything that moves.

The fox in the Ardèche

In the vast wilderness of the Ardèche, the fox is a discreet master. Its reddish coat blends skilfully with the autumnal shades of the undergrowth, enabling it to move almost invisibly. Every night, it scours the winding paths in search of potential prey, its silent gait and keen eyesight making it a formidable predator.

The locals are well aware of its habits: the fox likes to scour the edges of fields at dusk, looking out for small rodents and insects. Its bushy tail, often described in local literature, is a symbol of cunning and agility. Ancient legends describe it as a cunning animal, capable of mysterious disappearances in plain sight of walkers.

The fox needed for ecological balance

Although often overlooked, the fox plays a crucial role in the ecological balance of the region. By regulating populations of small mammals, it helps to maintain the health of local ecosystems. Every encounter with this magnificent predator is a moment of wonder, a reminder of the fragile beauty of the Ardèche wilderness.
