The Pont d’Arc

The Pont d’Arc is a superb natural arch, 54 metres high and 60 metres wide, spanning the Ardèche river. These dimensions are the inside dimensions. It marks the entrance to the Gorges de l’Ardèche and is part of the Gorges de l’Ardèche Nature Reserve. It is a natural splendour.

The Arch pierced by water from the Ardèche

The arch was pierced by erosion caused by the friction between water and pebbles. This combination gradually carved out the 2 sides of the rock upstream and downstream, blocking the flow of water. The result was the formation of the meander, which is sometimes flooded during very high floods in the Ardèche following episodes in the Cévennes.

The Chauvet cave (original)

In the hollow of the Combe du Pont d’Arc, on the heights, is the entrance to the Chauvet cave, the original cave, which is closed to the public. But you can visit the reconstruction area, which faithfully reproduces the interior of the cave. See our page on the Grotte Chauvet.

Yes, that’s right. On the right bank, in the commune of Labastide de Virac, there is a natural crevice that allows you to pass from upstream to downstream of the arch. However, it can only be reached with a bit of climbing and a torch, as you can’t see anything inside. Only experienced climbers will be able to squeeze through.

It is impossible and strictly forbidden to attempt to cross the Pont d’Arc by its crest line, as this would present serious risks. The crest of the Pont d’Arc Arch is a steep and unstable rock formation. Crossing this ridge could lead to fatal falls. It would also pose a huge risk to those below due to falling rocks.

In addition, because of the ecological and heritage value of the Pont d’Arc Arch, access to certain parts of the formation is regulated. The aim is to preserve the natural environment and protect sensitive archaeological or geological sites.

Yes, it is possible throughout the summer season when the low water level of the Ardèche is low. There is a ford about a hundred metres downstream of the Pont d’Arc that allows you to cross from one bank to the other
