The viperine snake (part 2)

The viperine snake is a magnificent little snake that is completely harmless, as seen here filmed in the Ardèche.
The viperine snake, a non-venomous snake
This non-venomous snake is widespread in Europe, particularly in France. It occurs near water sources such as rivers, ponds and marshes. This preference for aquatic environments stems from its diet, which consists mainly of fish and amphibians.
The viperine snake is generally between 60 and 90 cm long. However, it can reach a maximum length of 1 metre. Its robust body, with carinated scales, gives it a rough appearance. Its colouring varies from brown to grey with dark zigzag patterns, making it easy to confuse with vipers.
This confusion is accentuated by its defensive behaviour. When it feels threatened, this snake adopts an aggressive posture. It flattens its head, hisses and strikes without biting, imitating vipers to deter predators. However, it remains harmless to humans and prefers to flee whenever possible.
Viperine snake reproduction
It breeds mainly in spring. After mating, the female lays between 10 and 30 eggs in summer. The eggs hatch around two months later. The young snakes measure between 10 and 15 cm and are immediately independent.
The viperine snake plays an important ecological role. By regulating fish and amphibian populations, it contributes to the balance of aquatic ecosystems. It is also an indicator of water quality, its presence characterising a healthy environment.
A protected species
Despite its ecological value, the viperine snake sometimes suffers persecution because of its resemblance to vipers. Raising public awareness of its harmlessness is essential to its protection. By respecting this animal, we are helping to preserve biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems.
