A harmless viperine snake

Totally harmless like all snakes in France, the viperine snake resembles vipers, with which it can be confused through ignorance. The similarities include a zigzag pattern on its back, a clear pattern on its head and its defensive posture with a flattened head. However, its only defence is the secretion of anal glands.

An aquatic viperine snake

Highly adapted to the aquatic environment, it has characteristic dark spots with light centres on its flanks. Oviparous like all garter snakes in France, its habitat includes plains and hills, stagnant and slow-flowing waters with abundant vegetation. It also colonises marshy meadows. It can also be found in almost every river and stream in the Ardèche, including the Ardèche itself. You may come across it along the banks during a canoe trip.

Its power supply

Its diet consists of fish, frogs, toads, newts, fish spawn and tadpoles.

A protected species

Remember that ALL snakes are protected by the 1976 law. Any offender is liable to a fine of up to 1,000 euros. The number of snakes is constantly decreasing, so they need to be protected. Respect them and admire them.
