Bessas
The old village
Perched on a hill 280 metres above sea level, Bessas is a picturesque little village with a population of 200, between Barjac and the Chassezac valley. It’s a hidden gem in the heart of the vineyards and garrigues. With its narrow streets and stone houses, this little village exudes an authentic atmosphere. Peaceful, perfect for a getaway in the heart of nature.
Dominating the village, the ruins of the medieval castle bear witness to Bessas’ rich historical past. Life in Bessas revolves around its central square, where the 12th-century church is located and local events take place. Weekly markets and village festivities. Visitors can sample local produce, meet the friendly locals and admire the local crafts.
The castle
This village boasts a castle flanked by four round towers dating from the late 16th century.
The church
The church, with its Baroque façade, houses a polychrome wooden altarpiece dating from the mid-17th century. It is on the supplementary list of historic monuments.
Bessas offers miles of panoramic views over the neighbouring departments of Gard and Vaucluse, all the way to Mont Ventoux. A footpath around the village and a network of signposted footpaths will enable you to discover these superb horizons.
