Dolmens in the Ardèche

The dolmens of the Ardèche are remarkable megalithic monuments dating mainly from the Neolithic period, between 3000 and 2000 BC. The Ardèche, in south-east France, is home to one of the largest concentrations of dolmens in Europe, with around 800 identified structures. These monuments are mainly located in the south of the Ardèche, notably in the Labeaume, Saint-Alban-Auriolles and Saint-Remèze regions, Labastide de Virac and near Aven d’Orgnac.

Description and function of the dolmens

Dolmens are funerary structures made up of large stone slabs, often laid vertically to form walls, with a horizontal slab forming the roof. They were used as collective burials, and excavations have revealed human remains as well as various funerary objects such as pottery, stone tools and jewellery.

The dolmens of the Ardèche are fascinating witnesses to the region’s ancient history. They attract not only archaeology and history enthusiasts, but also hikers and nature lovers. Their preservation and study continue to shed light on Neolithic societies and their relationship with death and memory.
