Last hamlet before the entrance to the Ardèche gorges

Take the time to stop off at the very charming little hamlet of Chames, in the commune of Vallon Pont d’Arc. It’s just beyond the Pont d’Arc. These are the last dwellings before the narrowing that marks the entrance to the Gorges de l’Ardèche.

Chames, starting point for a number of walks

Chames is also the starting point for a number of hikes. These include the hike to the Tiourre mill, the hike to the Pissevieille canyon and waterfall, and the hike to the Ardèche gorges.

The Ardèche gorges tourist route

Passing through Chames, the tourist route of the Ardèche Gorges is an emblematic itinerary that crosses one of the most picturesque regions of France. Stretching for around 30 kilometres between Vallon Pont d’Arc and Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche, this route offers some remarkable panoramas.

The route winds through spectacular scenery, impressive limestone cliffs and a turquoise river. It offers incomparable views from the many belvederes along the way. The most famous viewpoints include the famous Pont d’Arc, a massive natural arch spanning the river. Also of note is the Espèlugues lookout, which offers panoramic views of the gorge and valley below.

As well as magnificent panoramic views, the Gorges de l’Ardèche tourist route allows visitors to discover numerous natural and historical sites. Prehistoric caves, picturesque medieval villages and tranquil beaches along the river. It’s also a great place for outdoor activities such as kayaking, canoeing, hiking and cycling.
