Near the small town of Les Vans, the Bois de Païolive is one of the strangest natural curiosities in the southern Ardèche. Covering an area of 16km2, it is an incredible labyrinth of holm and white oaks, arbutus trees and, above all, rocks carved by the wind, rain and sun. The result is some superb lapiaz and unexpected natural sculptures.

The Chassezac gorges

Right in the heart of this wood, the river Chassezac has created the sumptuous Chassezac gorges, which you can canoe down. Enthusiasts also come here to practise slacklining. Families also enjoy climbing with their children.

A Natura 2000 area

This remarkable wood is classified as a Natura 2000 zone and a sensitive natural area. Originating in the Jurassic period, some 180 million years ago, this karstic limestone environment has a magical and marvellous appearance. The combination of rock and vegetation captures the imagination. The Bois de Païolive is a remarkable geological site. It’s also one of Europe’s major centres of biodiversity and natural beauty.

Hiking in the Bois de Païolive

The landscapes are magnificent and its heritage exceptional. There are signposted footpaths such as the Vierge, the Corniche and the Boucle du Randonneur. Walkers will have fun recognising the most surprising shapes. Birds and their nests, bears and lions, elephants and tortoises.
