Lake Issarlès
Lake Issarlès is of volcanic origin
Lake Issarlès is a volcanic lake, formed around 8,000 years ago. It occupies the crater of an ancient extinct volcano. It measures around 97 hectares and reaches a maximum depth of 138 metres, making it one of the deepest natural lakes in France.
A footpath leads around the lake. There are superb walks and mountain bike rides around the village. They offer a magnificent panorama of the basaltic flows of the Vallée de la Veyradeyre and the phonolithic rocks.
A fisherman’s paradise
It’s also a fisherman’s paradise. Brown and rainbow trout, Arctic char, salmon, minnows, gudgeons and whitefish. All these fish inhabit the crystal-clear waters of this mid-mountain lake.
