Labeaume, a village of character in the Ardèche

Labeaume, a village full of character in the Ardèche, enchants visitors with its picturesque atmosphere and rich preserved heritage. Nestling in the heart of the southern Ardèche, this magnificent village boasts cobbled streets, stone houses and medieval vaults that bear witness to a past steeped in history. Overlooking the Ardèche gorges, the village offers breathtaking panoramas, inviting you to contemplate and marvel.

On the banks of the River Baume, near Ruoms, this superb village of character is surrounded by cliffs once carved with troglodytic caves. At the top of this rocky spur stands a fortified house, overlooking the remains of the old castle and the seigniorial mill. The houses, built of pebbles extracted directly from the river, are intertwined in the rock. They are squeezed together along narrow, winding calades, little passageways that form a veritable labyrinth.

Labeaume en Musique

In summer, the village comes alive with colourful markets, outdoor shows and lively festivals, including the famous Labeaume en Musique music festival.

Activities

Outdoor activities abound, offering visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the surrounding nature. Hiking allows you to explore the paths winding through the picturesque landscapes of the Ardèche. For thrill-seekers, canoeing on the Ardèche offers a memorable experience in the heart of the gorges. History buffs will love visiting the Romanesque church and medieval castle. There are 142 dolmens (the highest density in Europe) in this small municipality.

This village of character is also an ideal base for exploring the natural and cultural treasures of the Ardèche. Nearby, the Aven d’Orgnac caves and the Grotte Chauvet offer fascinating discoveries. For those in search of relaxation, the river beaches invite you to swim and relax. Labeaume’s warm, friendly atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for holidaymakers seeking authenticity.

Labeaume is much more than just a village with character; it’s a real jewel in the Ardèche, and a must-see. The square-arched bell tower of the Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens church has a very distinctive style. In the shade of the centuries-old plane trees on the Place de Sablas, you can admire the old submersible bridge.

Accommodation in Labeaume

Given how busy this village is at the height of the season, we recommend Mas de la Fontenette in Labastide de Virac. With a capacity for 6 people, its heated infinity pool and wellness area, it’s one of the best gites in the whole region.
