A magnificent double waterfall

Just 10 minutes from Lagorce, the little-known Gour de la Sompe hardly ever appears on maps or recommended tourist sites. Yet this small valley of the Gour de la Sompe is magnificent. It’s very easy to get to. About a hundred metres before you reach it, descend to your right directly into the bed of the stream, which is almost always dry. After 300 metres or so of easy access, you’ll come to the first twenty-metre waterfall and its gour. A short, fairly steep path, which is passable in dry weather, leads to the gour, where you can see some superb dragonflies.

When evaporation has not been too severe, there are still a few puddles in the bed of the stream where life remains precarious but visible. Numerous aerial and aquatic insects and amphibians come here to find the water they need to survive. On the way back, visit the old village of Lagorce, most of whose cobbled streets are only accessible on foot.

Flooding of the Gour de la Sompe

The flooding of the Gour de Sompe is impressive and well worth the diversions. The roar of the water rushing down the two successive waterfalls will leave you with a memory of the power of a river.
