At the mouth of the Gorges, nestling on the banks of the river, lies Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. In 1938, Max Ernst, the surrealist painter, made his mark here. The inhabitants of Saint-Martin, “les trempes cul” as their neighbours called them. Because of the many floods that affected the village, they lived off the river for a long time. Close to an exceptional natural site, the Ardèche Gorges Nature Reserve. Saint Martin also boasts a rich historical heritage.
