Route 3: Saint-Roman chapel

Route 3: Saint-Roman chapel

The hill of Saint Roman

The Saint Roman hill in Labastide de Virac offers magnificent panoramic views. Signposted footpaths allow hikers to discover the wild beauty of the region. Between guarrigues, holm oaks and impressive rock formations.

The chapel of Saint Roman

Climbing up the hill, visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient hermitage of Saint Roman. On the west side, the hill is an excellent vantage point for admiring the sunset. On the northern horizon is Mont Gerbier de Jonc (source of the Loire). A little further west, the Mezenc with its 2 peaks rises to around 1750 metres.

A superb place for cross-country skiing in winter. On the east side, there’s a magnificent, almost aerial view of the old village of Labastide de Virac. Through the trees, you can see the Mas de la Fontenette drowned in the surrounding forest.

What remains of the chapel can be reached either by hiking (a short hour’s walk) or by mountain bike.

The medieval village of Labastide de Virac

Labastide de Virac, with its charming cobbled streets and medieval castle, is the perfect complement to this nature break. Plan a visit to the hill of Saint Roman for a rewarding day’s hiking and spectacular views over the Ardèche.
