Rochemaure lies in the eastern part of the Ardèche, on the banks of the Rhône, 5km from Montélimar. At the foot of the Coirons mountains and an ancient volcano: the Chenavari. The inhabitants are called rupismauriens. The name Rochemaure comes from the Low Latin roca maura and means “Black Rock”, a perfect name for the black basalt dykes of the Coiron massif.

A village of character in the Ardèche

This village of character in the Ardèche has many traces of its past. Rochemaure boasts a rich historical heritage, including a 12th-century castle, a 13th-century Notre Dame des Anges chapel, a 19th-century church and a 19th-century suspension bridge. The ramparts, which surround the entire village, were built in the 13th century, with two towers: the “Tour du Guast” and the “Tour de Bise”. They extend from the castle down into the valley. They were called vintenum because the inhabitants who lived within the walls had to give one-twentieth of their harvests to the lord to maintain the work and pay the soldiers.
