Over 900 dolmens in the Ardèche

In the south of the Ardèche, you’ll discover a magnificent little canyon. It’s famous for its 3 dolmens, which can be seen from the road and reached in just 10 minutes on foot. Access is along the small, winding road between Saint Alban Auriolles and Lablachère.

Note that the access is full of faults, some of which are several metres deep. The dolmens were originally covered, maintained and protected by a mass of stones and earth known as a tumulus. In their current state of degradation, dolmens often appear as simple tables whose fill has been eroded away over the centuries.

There are many other dolmens not far from Mas de la Fontenette. The Devèze dolmen, the Font du Loup dolmen, the Champagnac dolmen, the Oeillantes dolmens, etc.

Collective funerary monuments

Although there is still a certain amount of mystery surrounding these megaliths and their builders, archaeologists tell us that they were collective funerary monuments, dating back some 4 to 5,000 years. This takes us back to the end of the Neolithic period, more commonly known as the Copper Age. There are over 900 dolmens in the Ardèche department. At the bottom of the canyon, in places, there is still a little water and all the life associated with it.
