Montbrun Castle

The castle overlooks cliffs over thirty metres high. All that remains are a few sections of wall almost level with the ground.

The troglodyte dwellings of the balmes de Montbrun

Set up as a medieval village, there are around fifty dwellings carved into the cliffs of the crater of this shattered volcano. Nearly half of them are still standing.
The last inhabitants left the village around 1880.

The site is freely accessible. You can also enjoy guided historical and geological tours.

The chapel of the balmes de Montbrun

The old village had its own place of worship, a partially troglodyte chapel to the north of the château, on the other side of the village. The front facade, the only built part of the building, combines brick and basalt stone frames. It appears to date from the 19th century.
