Alba la Romaine, a beautiful village full of character

The village of Alba la Romaine is one of the 21 villages with character in the Ardèche. Inside the fortifications of the present-day village (13th century), a labyrinth of narrow cobbled and vaulted streets reveals the charm of two-tone architecture. It resembles a checkerboard of black basalt and white limestone.

Most of the houses were built in the 16th and 17th centuries, but some are even older. Inscriptions, decorated door lintels and biblical reliefs all whisper their own stories to the attentive visitor.

A rich historical and archaeological past

Alba-la-Romaine is surrounded by picturesque countryside, perfect for walking and exploring nature. Its weekly market and numerous local artisans contribute to the village’s friendly atmosphere. A Gallo-Roman museum

The Museum of Alba-la-Romaine, officially known as MuséAl, is dedicated to the history and archaeology of the ancient city of Alba Helviorum, capital of the Helvians in Gallo-Roman times. Opened in 2013, it presents a rich collection of archaeological objects discovered on the site, including statues, mosaics, ceramics and tools of daily life. The museum offers an interactive and educational tour, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the daily lives of the inhabitants of this ancient Roman city. Temporary exhibitions, children’s workshops and lectures regularly enhance the cultural offering at MuséAL. Located close to the archaeological remains, MuséAL is a great way to extend your visit to the site, providing valuable scientific and historical insights.
